Research Project Title and Description

Spatial and Gender Dimensions of IPM Adoption in Uganda

In Africa, food security and poverty are high priority problems that are being addressed through programs that promote economic growth through agriculture. The Integrated Pest Management Collaborative Research Support Program (IPM CRSP) is such a program that develops and implements IPM for raising individual farmers’ crop productivity, reducing expenditures on pesticides, and improving the conditions for human and environmental health. Development projects, however, can be ineffective when they do not take gender issues and the significant role women play in African agriculture into consideration. This research seeks to explore the gender dimensions of the IPM project for tomato growers in Busukuma Sub-County, Uganda. Spatial factors such as distance to inputs, modes of transportation and mobility are analyzed to determine if they contribute to gendered constraints in IPM adoption.
