STUDY ABROAD -- Summer Session II
July 8 - 23 2008

PREPARATION

Check this page for subsequent updates. When questions about preparations for the program are submitted by teachers, the answers will be posted here.

Teachers must have a passport that is valid for the duration of the study abroad. If you do not have a passport or if your current passport will expire before the completion of the program, you need to obtain a new passport. As there can be considerable delays in obtaining passports, teachers are encouraged to apply for passports at least six months before the start of this study abroad program.

We will also have several required readings posted online to help you prepare for the study abroad. These items must be read before arriving in England.

You should pack lightly for the trip. You should bring one small-to-medium sized rolling suitcase and one smaller carry-on bag, such as a small backpack (bookbag size). We urge you to bring a small backpack, which will be very valuable and convenient to bring with you during outdoor exercises.

You should also bring a digital camera because there will be required photographic activities.

As the weather in the Lake District can be cool even in summer, you should bring with you a light jacket and sweater. In addition, this is England, so be sure to bring a good umbrella and hat with you. It is also useful to bring a small amount of powdered laundry detergent with you to wash clothes while on your trip.

If you have electrical devices that need to be charged (such as a laptop or digital camera), be sure that they can work with British electrical current, which is 220-240 volts at 50 Hz. You will also need to obtain an electrical plug converter, because the electrical outlets in England are shaped differently than those here.

Because we will be in both London and in rural areas, you should bring shoes suitable for urban activities as well as tennis shoes/sneakers or comfortable boots for hiking in the mountains.

You do not need to bring British currency with you. You can obtain British pounds at Heathrow airport using most ATM cards. It is a good idea to bring travelers checks.

You should bring a good lock for your suitcase to protect your valuables when you are away from your room.

Bring a portable alarm clock with you.

You will need to purchase a roundtrip airline ticket from the US to London Heathrow airport. You must arrive at London Heathrow airport by 10:00 AM on July 9 to take advantage of program-provided transportation from the airport to our residence in London.
